The works of Prazeres Côta, much like those of her mother Júlia, evoke rural life in the Minho region, with its traditional characters and the influence of religious and mythological beliefs.

This figurine represents the Catholic Saint Anthony (São Antonio). It is the most authentic expression of Prazeres Côta’s personal and creative world—she shapes the clay in a naive, heartfelt way, portraying the world around her.

What I love

  • A figurine that blurs the lines between craft and naïve art.
  • A humorous and heartfelt depiction of Saint Anthony.
  • A unique piece, signed by the artist herself.

Specifications

More informations?

The Côta family is the most charismatic and iconic name in the figurative folk art of Barcelos and the wider Minho region in northern Portugal.

Prazeres, one of Júlia Côta’s daughters, now continues the tradition established by her great-grandfather, João Domingos Côta da Rocha—creator of the famous Portuguese Rooster (Galo de Barcelos).

Named “New Talent of the Year” at the 2018 Feira de Barcelos, she is now featured in the Pottery Museum’s "Geração Côta" exhibition, which includes several of her pieces from both the museum’s collection and private collections.
